The top local league, also known as “Leegat Haal”, is a strongly contended league whose winner is crowned the Israeli Soccer champion. The Winner of the Israeli league is often decided in a last minute battle to the death, and there is no shortage of suspense. Such was the 2010 season in which season long front runner Maccabi Haifa lost their lead over the league and the title of Israeli champions to Hapoel Tel-Aviv in the final game of the season. Also notable in 2010 is Maccabi Haifa’s ascension to the” Champions League”, the greatest football league on earth and Hapoel Tel-Aviv’s campaign in the “Europa League” in which they beat great teams such as “Celtic”, “Hamburg” and “Rapid Viena”. Israeli Soccer abroad

Israeli soccer players and coaches have not stayed confined to the borders of their country. Most notably in this era are Yossi Benayoun, the Liverpool midfielder, who amongst his impressive repertoire has even got a Champions League Hat Trick and Avram Grant, the Portsmouth manager who has led Chelsea to the Champions League final in 2008 and is now facing off against that same Chelsea team in one week’s time in the final of the British Cup (good luck Avram!). The Israeli national soccer team is also a formidable squad. Narrowly missing the world cup this year shall do a great job in fueling them for their up and coming Euroean Cup campaign.
